Chinkapin Oak Update

Back in January of 2019 I cut down the damaged Chinkapin oak at the base. Below are pictures of re-growth.

Growth during 2019

In 2020 trimmed new growth back to two main stems.

After 2019 growing season.

During the 2020 growing season kept both stems.

Growth during 2020

December of 2020 I cut the left stem pictured above. Leaving one stem to grow in 2021.

I didn’t do an update for the 2021 or 2022 growing seasons. Below are some pictures after the 2023 growing season.

I have my 16 foot measuring stick leaning up on the tree. Estimated height around 18 feet.
Base of tree after 2023 growing season about 8 inch diameter.
The new stem has almost covered the old stump portion at the end of 2023.

In summary I cut the about 8 year old Chinkapin oak tree down in January 2019. It has had 5 growing seasons since. It is currently around 18 feet tall which would be over three and a half feet of growth per year. My major concern was how the base covered the old stump and remained solid. I think that the base is solid. So I think it has been a successful trial.
